Background of the Study
Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV is a significant public health issue in sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria. Without proper intervention, HIV can be transmitted from an infected mother to her child during pregnancy, labor, or breastfeeding. However, with effective prevention strategies, such as the use of antiretroviral therapy (ART), the risk of MTCT can be reduced to less than 5% (Olufemi et al., 2023). Nurses play a critical role in the prevention of MTCT by educating pregnant women, providing antenatal care, ensuring adherence to ART regimens, and supporting mothers during labor and postpartum periods.
In Adamawa State, despite efforts to curb the spread of HIV, the rate of MTCT remains a concern. Nurses, particularly those working in antenatal care and maternal health units, are essential in implementing the national HIV prevention programs, but the impact of their specific roles has not been comprehensively studied. This research will explore how nurses’ roles in counseling, care provision, and support contribute to reducing MTCT rates in Adamawa State.
Statement of the Problem
Although prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV has become a focal point of maternal health interventions, MTCT rates remain high in Adamawa State, largely due to gaps in healthcare service delivery, patient adherence, and stigma surrounding HIV. Nurses, as primary caregivers during antenatal and postpartum periods, are central to the success of prevention strategies. However, there is limited research on the specific impact of their roles in preventing MTCT in the state. This study aims to evaluate the contributions of nurses in reducing the incidence of MTCT in Adamawa State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of nurses in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Adamawa State.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions in reducing MTCT rates in Adamawa State.
3. To identify barriers and challenges faced by nurses in preventing MTCT in Adamawa State.
Research Questions
1. What is the role of nurses in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV in Adamawa State?
2. How effective are nursing interventions in reducing MTCT rates in Adamawa State?
3. What barriers and challenges do nurses face in the prevention of MTCT in Adamawa State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses' roles in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV significantly reduce the incidence of MTCT in Adamawa State.
2. The availability of resources and training is positively correlated with the effectiveness of nursing interventions in preventing MTCT in Adamawa State.
3. Stigma and inadequate healthcare infrastructure significantly hinder the ability of nurses to prevent MTCT in Adamawa State.
Definitions of Terms
• Mother-to-Child Transmission (MTCT): The transmission of HIV from an infected mother to her child during pregnancy, labor, delivery, or breastfeeding.
